Careers at REI

We hire people with high agency, sincerity, and a bias for action over theory. AI is a core part of how we work. Remote-first, London coworking days.

Senior Software Engineer

Full-time Remote-first, London coworking

Experienced technical backbone for a fast-moving team. Build production systems, architect solutions, and be the quality gate for critical public infrastructure.

What you'll do
  • Build and architect production systems
  • Review code before it ships; be a quality gate for critical public infrastructure
  • Identify and fix AI-generated code patterns that look plausible but are wrong
  • Make architectural decisions robust enough for NHS and other high-stakes environments
  • Establish code quality standards and testing practices
  • Mentor junior engineers on writing maintainable, secure code
Who you are
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, ideally including regulated environments
  • You recognise bad code instantly, including AI-generated code that seems fine but isn't
  • Deep expertise in JavaScript, Python, and modern web frameworks
  • Strong understanding of security best practices and common vulnerability patterns
  • You've made architectural decisions you later regretted, and learned from them
  • Thorough without being slow. Rigorous review that doesn't block velocity

Product Engineer

Full-time Remote-first, London coworking

Young, hungry engineer who treats AI as a core part of their workflow. Build software serving millions through UK government contracts and beyond.

What you'll do
  • Build production software using JS/Python and modern frameworks with AI-accelerated workflows
  • Develop and deploy machine learning systems that solve real problems
  • Ship features end-to-end: from understanding user needs to production deployment
  • Work closely with government stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver solutions
  • Contribute to REI's core AI agent architecture and tooling
Who you are
  • You've built things that work and produce value: side projects, startups, research systems
  • AI tools (Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor) are already part of how you code
  • Product instinct. You think about users and where value comes from, not just code
  • Ideally: ML/AI engineering experience (mechanistic interpretability, training pipelines, etc.)
  • Strong fundamentals in JavaScript and Python
  • You ship fast and aren't precious about your code

  • Write compelling proposals and manage the bid process end-to-end
  • Guide product development priorities based on market demand
  • Shape go-to-market strategy for UK government and eventually Canada/US
Who you are

You have direct experience with UK government software procurement from one of these backgrounds:

  • Government-side: Worked in UK government (GDS, CDDO, NHS Digital, a department digital team) and used the procurement system to acquire software services
  • Supplier-side: Worked at a software consultancy winning government contracts with a track record of successful bids
  • Bonus: startup drive, technical background, SMB sales experience, or experience navigating bureaucracy in complex organisations
